Native Americans Gathering Food

Throughout the continent of North America there were many different styles of survival used by each Native American tribe to stay alive. For example, the Inuit tribe up in the Alaskan area were mainly fishers and the Blackfoot and Sioux tribes would be considered "big game" hunters. I find it fascinating how every tribe was so different and great at adapting depending on the environment and the seasons. One very interesting style of hunting I saw was that the Natives would actually gather a large group of animals and scare them off a cliff to kill them. The fact that Natives were amazing at setting traps is just incredible to me because trapping is something that requires great skill and time to perfect. Our culture now has has really fallen away from providing naturally for ourselves and I think that could be a downfall to our society if anything detrimental happened where we actually did have to provide for ourselves. Maybe there is something to learn from our past...

  1. My parents' generation believed we would all be lost because we didn't know how to "make food" or do anything without technology. There are many fictional books with that theme. I guess we would have to learn to do everything the Native Americans did so naturally.
